Knives for Everyday Carry, Tactical Use, and Self Defense
A quality knife is one of the most versatile tools you can carry. Whether you need it for everyday tasks, outdoor adventures, emergency situations, or personal protection, the right blade is an extension of your preparedness. At Smart Pulse Safety we carry a curated selection of OTF knives, spring assisted knives, and folding tactical knives chosen for quality, reliability, and real-world performance. Every knife in our collection is selected because it does its job well when you need it most.
What Is an OTF Knife?
OTF stands for Out the Front. An OTF knife is an automatic knife where the blade deploys and retracts through a hole in the front of the handle rather than folding out from the side. With a single slide or button press, the blade shoots out and locks into place instantly. OTF knives are prized for their speed of deployment and one-handed operation, making them a top choice for people who need fast, reliable blade access. They are legal in many U.S. states for civilian carry but are restricted in others. Check your state laws before ordering.
Spring Assisted Knives vs. Automatic Knives
Spring assisted knives are often confused with automatic knives but there is an important legal distinction. An automatic knife deploys the blade entirely by pressing a button or switch with no manual effort required. A spring assisted knife requires you to manually begin opening the blade, typically by applying pressure to a flipper tab or thumb stud, and then a spring takes over to finish the deployment quickly. Spring assisted knives deploy nearly as fast as automatics but are classified differently under the law and are legal in more states. Both types offer fast one-handed deployment and are excellent choices for EDC and tactical carry.
Folding and Tactical Knives
Folding knives are legal to purchase and possess in all 50 states and are the most versatile option for everyday carry. A quality folding knife with a reliable locking mechanism, a comfortable grip, and a sharp blade is one of the most practical tools you can have on you at any time. Our tactical folding knives are built for real use, with durable blade steel, secure pocket clips, and ergonomic handles designed for a confident grip under pressure. Whether you need a blade for utility tasks, outdoor use, or personal protection, our folding knife selection covers every use case and price point.
Blade Steel and What It Means for Performance
The steel used in a blade determines how sharp it gets, how long it holds an edge, how easy it is to resharpen, and how resistant it is to corrosion. Most of the knives we carry use high-quality stainless steel alloys that balance sharpness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance for everyday carry use. Harder steel holds an edge longer but can be more difficult to resharpen in the field. Softer steel is easier to maintain but may need more frequent sharpening. If you have questions about which blade steel is right for your use case, call us at 504-814-0887.
Knife Carry Tips
Most of the knives in our collection include a pocket clip for secure, accessible carry in a pants pocket or on a waistband. Carry your knife in a consistent location so you can access it quickly and naturally under stress. Keep your blade sharp because a dull knife requires more force to use and is actually more dangerous than a sharp one. Familiarize yourself with your knife's locking mechanism before you carry it so you can deploy and close the blade safely and confidently.
Shipping Restrictions
OTF and automatic knives are restricted in several states. Smart Pulse Safety does not ship OTF, automatic, or spring assisted knives to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Virginia, Washington State, Washington DC, or Wyoming. Folding and tactical knives are legal to purchase and possess in all 50 states. Federal law prohibits shipping OTF, automatic, and spring assisted knives via USPS. All knife orders are shipped via FedEx or UPS only. Carry laws vary by state, city, and county. Check your local laws before carrying any knife in public. Frequently Asked Questions
Are OTF knives legal?
OTF knives are legal in many U.S. states but restricted or prohibited in others. Smart Pulse Safety does not ship OTF or automatic knives to states where they are restricted. Check our Product Laws page for the full no-ship list and verify your local laws before ordering.
What is the difference between an OTF knife and a switchblade?
They are the same category under the law. Both are automatic knives that deploy the blade without manual opening effort. OTF specifically refers to the direction the blade deploys, while switchblade is the older, more commonly used legal term for any automatic knife.
Can I carry a knife in public?
Folding knives are legal to carry in most states, but concealed carry laws vary significantly by state, city, and county. Blade length restrictions also vary. It is your responsibility to verify carry laws in your area before carrying any knife in public.
Why can't you ship knives via USPS?
Federal law prohibits shipping switchblades and automatic knives via the U.S. Postal Service. All knife orders from Smart Pulse Safety are shipped via FedEx or UPS.
How do I maintain my knife?
Keep the blade clean and dry to prevent corrosion. Oil the pivot and locking mechanism periodically to keep deployment smooth. Sharpen the blade regularly using a whetstone or sharpening tool appropriate for the blade steel. A well-maintained knife will last a lifetime.
